Developing learning content for the UCL Child and Adolescent Psychology and Neuroscience postgraduate diploma

This year, UCL and Anna Freud launched the Child and Adolescent Psychology and Neuroscience in Practice Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip CAPNiP), an online distance learning programme aimed at professionals that work with children and young people within the social care, education, community or health sector.

The programme offers a comprehensive overview of child and adolescent mental health, introducing core concepts, theories and models of evidence-based practice. CORC was commissioned to design and develop course content on routine outcome measurement, to support professionals to use outcome measures meaningfully as part of their support for children and young people.

To ensure that the content was relevant and accessible to professionals from varied sectors, we developed a structured programme of learning including:

  • the benefits to children and young people and to practice, associated with outcome and feedback tools

  • the key principles of using measures

  • considerations when choosing measures

  • using outcome measures to evaluate an intervention

  • how to analyse and report data, using statistical concepts

  • what children and young people tell us about how they want measures to be used as part of their support.

We integrated CORC research on working with outcome measures with specific populations to support students to tailor learning to their practice needs and to be aware of some of the challenges in using measures meaningfully. This includes our work with children that are looked after, children from minoritised backgrounds and children with learning disabilities.

We created a number of training videos with contributions from across the CORC team, alongside activities and a podcast to embed learning. To ensure that the voice of children and young people was integral to the learning, we included videos of Young Champions from Anna Freud sharing their views on outcome measures, and how they think practitioners should introduce and feedback on them.

Students currently on the course report that they have found learning about the variety of tools and the breakdown of working with data helpful and interesting. Jodie Rawlings, Clinical Co-Director of the programme, said:
