Cultures guidance: Understanding and addressing the challenges of outcome measurement associated with differences in culture

We are pleased to share our guidance on ‘Understanding and addressing the challenges of outcome measurement which are associated with differences in culture’. We introduced our guidance at this year’s CORC Forum, and it was fantastic to share our work with attendees.

As part of our commitment to Closing the Gap in mental health support, in April 2023 CORC formed a working group of professionals from the NHS and voluntary sector organisations across the country to work with us to explore challenges in outcome measurement that are associated with differences in culture. The guidance has emerged out of the discussions of this group, and in consultation with the CORC Advisory group and our wider Anna Freud networks.

The guidance is for professionals and practitioners that support children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing. It aims to raise awareness of the issues, identify good practice, share knowledge and resources and promote effective ways of using measures in all cultural contexts to enhance support for children and young people.

Within the guidance, we explore ways to respond to challenges in language accessibility, the impact of stigma associated with mental ill-health and specific cultural challenges related to trust in services and institutions. We also explore some of the issues associated with the development of some outcome measures, and their applicability and accuracy when used with young people from minoritised backgrounds.

We do not have all of the answers, but we are committed to ongoing learning and further collaboration to update guidance and resources. Contact us if you would like to contribute to our ongoing work.
