Young People’s and Professionals’ Qualitative Insights into Mental Health ‘Active Ingredients’ and Support in eight countries

We are involving young people and various stakeholders (researchers, policy makers) in eight countries, to understand how they conceptualise mental health difficulties. We are using collaborative focus groups and methodologies to investigate the perspectives of participants, by ranking and sorting a series of statements. This is to explore common presentations of anxiety and depression, in particular, and how this is supported in their sociocultural contexts. We are actively involving youth advisors from all countries taking part in the design, implementation and the dissemination of findings. The ultimate aim is to review the list of ‘Active Ingredients’ of prevention, treatments and approaches to anxiety and depression in young people aged 14-24. We will report our recommendations to refine the existing list of 26 ‘Active Ingredients’ currently being explored. This forms part of the Wellcome Trust’s new mental health strategy, launched in 2020.
